Tree Health & Diagnostics
Healthy trees begin with understanding the conditions around them. We take a diagnostic, preventative approach to tree care—looking beyond visible symptoms to understand disease, pests, soil, water, and environmental stress.
Plant Health Care takes a proactive approach to identifying and addressing the factors that affect tree health. Rather
than simply treating visible symptoms, we look at the underlying causes of disease, pest pressure, nutrient stress,
environmental damage, and decline.
Effective pest management does not always mean eliminating every insect or applying the strongest available treatment. Our Integrated Pest Management approach focuses on monitoring, identification, prevention, and targeted intervention.
We evaluate pest populations and their potential impact before determining whether treatment is necessary. When treatment is appropriate, we prioritize the least-impact method that can effectively address the problem while protecting beneficial insects, pollinators, surrounding vegetation, and the broader ecosystem.
IPM may include:
- Regular pest monitoring and identification
- Establishing treatment thresholds
- Cultural and preventative practices
- Targeted biological or mechanical controls
- Selective treatments when necessary
- Follow-up monitoring and adjustment
Hawaiʻi’s unique ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to invasive species. Early detection and responsible management can help protect trees, landscapes, native species, and surrounding habitats.
Our work may include identification, monitoring, and management of invasive threats such as:
Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB)
A serious threat to palms, particularly coconut palms. Management focuses on early detection, monitoring, sanitation, and coordinated control strategies.
Coqui Frogs
Coqui frogs can establish dense populations and alter local ecosystems. Management strategies are adapted to the site, surrounding habitat, and applicable local protocols.
Where appropriate, invasive-species management is approached as part of a larger ecosystem strategy rather than as an isolated treatment.
Healthy trees depend on healthy soil and appropriate water conditions. Hawaiʻi’s landscapes can vary dramatically over short distances, from young volcanic soils and rocky substrates to highly weathered soils, steep terrain, and areas with significant drainage challenges.
Our tree-care recommendations consider site-specific conditions including:
- Soil composition and structure
- Drainage and compaction
- Root-zone conditions
- Moisture availability
- Irrigation practices
- Leeward and wind-exposed conditions
- Slope and drainage patterns
- Nutrient availability
- Environmental stress
Understanding the relationship between soil, water, roots, and canopy health allows us to develop treatment and maintenance strategies that are appropriate for each individual site.
Tree health is rarely about one treatment or one visit. Our goal is to establish a clear understanding of the tree, identify contributing stressors, address problems thoughtfully, and monitor the results over time.
Caring for trees means caring for the living systems around them.
